Account of Conference between the Indians and the Friendly Association, May 10, 1771 – 2

matters and that as the Council fire that was kindled between
our forefathers seemed almost extinguished. He would
[obliterated text] be able to kindle it again & then the [illegible]
Love & friendship would be restored—
That he expected to be down here again in about
four months. & should be glad of being advised on this matter,
[illegible]
            he also further informed us-
that they were desirous of [obliterated text] having their
Children instructed in reading & writing in order that they
[oblitereated text] might [obliterated text] preserve the agreement entered into
and be able to fulfill them. that for want of this they found
they had almost forgotten the Ancient Conference, & Agreements held
Between our forefathers, & that the White people having
the Advantage of Learning; [obliterated text] knew what they were,
 that the great Being above who knew & sees all things
knew what he said came from his heart and not from
his head only. & they were desirous of knowing how truly
to worship him-
IP. then informed him of the Love & regard of Friends toward
 the Indians that the Divine Principle that we professed lead
us to that. and it would lead all men into the same
& reprove for Evil of tho’ we Esteemed Learning [obliterated text]
useful. yet this Divine Principle would teach them
to live Godly lives, [obliterated text] & that true Religion
was the only foundation of perfect love & [friendship]
and ask’d if any of our friends should from a Religious
motive be concerned to come to visit the Indians in this [illegible]
wheth’ they [obliterated text] would be kindly received, to which
he answered, that they should be glad to see them. and
should manifest it by their Conduct when they came
that a Moravian Preacher had lately been amongst them
